frosh week at X

I remember the first time I met Dan so vividly. It was frosh week at StFX, September 2005. One of the frosh activities to “get to know people” was to try and split our 1000+ group of first years into their birth months, and then try to order ourselves from earliest to latest in the month. This fairly lame activity marked the start of one of the most important relationships of my life. As I was trying to find my fellow June birthdays, a happy looking redhead boy walked towards me saying “June??” We spent the rest of the activity joined together, finding other people from our group and chatting excitedly the whole time. We discovered first that we actually had the exact same birthday then, that we were both from Calgary, and had dozens of mutual friends. We were both giddy (and probably drunk) talking about how crazy it was that we were born on the same day, in the same hospital, and grew up our whole lives in Calgary with so many mutual friends but were just now meeting on the other side of the country. We spent the rest of the night together, with our other newfound friends walking around campus and taking vodka chugs. Though I can’t remember all that we did or talked about that night I remember the feeling of being around him. That very first night, and for the next 15 years, being around Dan just made me… happy. He always felt so comfortable to me, and he brought out a side of me that I liked in myself.  Our back and forth came so easily from the first day we met. I have 1000 more memories and funny stories of Dan that I treasure, but for now I’m sharing the night it all started.  He is singlehandedly responsible for millions of my laughs, a few of my cries, lots of my friends and a part of my personality that will stay with me forever.
