the coolest calgarian at x
I should probably preface this by clarifying that any specifics to this story are quite hazy, and that most details are likely lost to the years gone by...or, I don't know, the borderline alcoholism that ensued throughout university life. Anyways, here we go...
It all begins with one of our very own, Christina Mack, venturing out east to attend the cult - sorry, I mean St. FX. In her first semester, she would gush (over MSN Messenger) about the house she ended up in, her new classmates, the passed down nicknames, and about all the cool people she had already met - including fellow Calgarian, Dan. She absolutely raved about Dan - about how hilarious he was, about how she couldn't wait for us to meet him, and she especially drove home the fact that he would 'fit in with our group so perfectly'.
Well, during one of their semester breaks (I can't remember which one specifically. Again, alcohol. I think double popped collars were in though), they both returned home to Calgary and we were finally able to meet.
This guy - friendly, witty, charming, charismatic, with that twinkle in his eye to boot. She was right about everything. I used to look forward to nights when I knew we'd run into Dan out on the town, at a party, or at a hangout with some mutual friends. Being around Dan was the best. He always took such a keen interest in your life, and he had this knack to remember the tiniest little detail from your last conversation. To top it all off, he could hold his own in any situation and possessed this precision-like ability to size you up and cut you down a few pegs with a witty one-liner.
I'll miss those run-ins, but I'm so grateful they happened. I know that Dan was surrounded by such a close, tight-knit group of friends, but he also cast such a wide net with his friendship, and well, I will always feel ever so lucky to have been caught in it.
