(not) holding doors and (sober) shotguns

Dan was one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. But more than funny, he was incredibly kind, which is why this story comes to mind and still makes me laugh.

Dan went through a stage at St.FX (and I’m sure I wasn’t the first or the last victim) where when he was walking ahead and entering a building, classroom, etc. instead of holding the door he would open it as tightly as possible so that he could slip through and then let it slam in my face after him. It made me laugh then and still makes me laugh now.

Another personal fav of mine is from a party we were all at ahead of the big BurMac hockey game at St.FX. For those who don’t know, Burmac was an annual game between the two houses on campus with the biggest rivalry - Burke and MacIsaac. For the month before the game, all of the players would quit drinking so that they could be in “peak” physical condition when it came time to play. Dan was playing for Burke and naturally took the prep for the game very seriously. At one point in the night a group of the guys decided to shotgun a beer. Dan was right in there with them, finished his in no time and dramatically slammed his empty can on the floor. If you looked closely though, he was drinking non-alcoholic beer. Even stone sober, he was the life of every party.
