squinny

I have had the hardest laughs of my life with Dan, no doubt.  There are endless stories of him making me laugh so hard, and so many inside jokes that we shared.

One inside joke him, I, and a a few other close friends share is the story of “squinny.”

One weekend in our early 20s when we were in Canmore we played a game of balderdash. None of us had played it before.  For anyone who isn’t familiar, Balderdash is a game where you are given a word that you have likely never heard before.  Everyone writes a definition and tries to trick people into picking their definition as the real meaning of the word.  After many beverages we quickly scrapped writing serious definitions and instead tried to write the funniest definitions we could.  One word we got was “Squinny.“ Dan‘s submission was “the distinct smell of urine after eating asparagus.”  We all laughed so hard, and from then on Dan and I always called the smell of urine after eating asparagus getting “squinny.“ To this day I don’t know the real definition of the word, and I will probably never look it up, because to me and Dan we already know what squinny means.

Miss him forever.
